Project Update: How Your Support Is Impacting Lives Overseas
Below is a brief update on some of the overseas and remote tribes projects you are making possible through your prayers and faithful financial support:
Canadian Arctic
Two missionaries are nearing the completion of one year above the Arctic Circle. The village of Igloolik has been their headquarters, and they have visited many homes and given Bible studies. They have joined the villagers in community projects and have really made a positive impact for Christ.
The people love the two missionaries so much that they are pleading with them to remain for another year! Their wish has been granted, and so they will be returning for a second year after a short rest away from the Arctic.
Congo
In October of last year, we sent two young missionaries to work among the Bambuti Pygmies and the Lugbwara tribe living in the Democratic Republic of Congo. As a result of your support and their efforts amidst hardship, privations, illness and danger, It Is Written is funding two clinics among the Bambuti Pygmies and a church in the Lugbwara tribe.
Peru
The efforts in Peru have been going strong, and following are highlights from three recent projects. First, thanks to donor support, the ministry has purchased a 21-passenger “Bus of Hope” to support a team of evangelists and musicians that will travel the country for large rallies and to follow up on Bible study interests. Second, while in Peru, Pastor Robert Costa recorded a total of 187 programs for broadcast on 23 radio stations throughout the Americas and Europe. Finally, in September 2008, the Está Escrito team held a two-pronged Impact Hope caravan series in North Peru.
Kalahari
This part of the world is where It Is Written first became involved with Sebastian Tirtirau and the Pilgrim Relief Society. The first project for the
San people of the Kalahari was the production and distribution of 700 MP3 players with the Bible in the San language. The second project resulted in the production of 2,400 MP3 players. A third project for the Kalahari involves water systems for the villages.
When we started this project, only 25 villages in Botswana and Namibia had a system. Over the last two years, thanks to your support, It Is Written has installed 100 water systems. This coming year, we plan to provide water systems for more than 60 villages. Our goal is for each village in the Kalahari Desert to have its own functioning water well!
Vanuatu
This special 80+ island nation hosts some of the most remote and untouched bush tribes in the world. Although the gospel has reached the main islands of Vanuatu, many geographically restricted tribes have never heard the Good News.
One of these
groups is the Kiai tribe, and they have a pressing and urgent need—mosquito nets. Every year, more than 90,000 children in Vanuatu
are affected by malaria and dengue fever. Both diseases are carried by
mosquitoes, and the most vulnerable to infection are children, with
child mortality rates topping 30 percent in some villages! Most
children who die in Vanuatu before the age of five, die of malaria. It
Is Written is committed to providing 3,000 nets (at the cost of $10
each) for the children of the Kiai tribe. These nets are large and can
easily accommodate four children per net, which means that 12,000 children will have this much-needed protection.
